The Karamojong are migrant pastoralists in northern Uganda. Last year, the area was particularly affected by the locust plague and the effects of climate change. Now, however, the whole of Uganda has been swept by the second wave of Covid. As Simon Peter Longoli from the Karamoja Development Forum in Moroto reported, the Covid wave is hitting the Karamoja region particularly hard, exacerbating an already extremely difficult situation in the crisis- and conflict-ridden region. Medical care and education are not reaching the remote communities of Karamojong migrant herders, and children have not been going to school for more than a year now. There is a lack of oxygen and the hospitals are already completely overloaded.

The Karamoja Development Forum (KDF), with which INFOE has been working for several years now, is trying to do awareness raising in the remote communities under the given conditions, to procure sanitary equipment and to negotiate in conflicts. We would like to support the KDF and are collecting donations for the purchase of oxygen cylinders and medical equipment as well as for direct support of families. For the support with most urgently needed medical equipment we cooperate with Humanitäre Hilfe für Uganda Verl e.V., which has been organizing relief transports and hospital care in Uganda for years and has the necessary logistics on site. We forward further donations to the Karamoja Development Forum for direct support of families.

Please support the Karamojong in Uganda with your donation to the INFOE account, IBAN: DE56 4306 0967 4068 2739 00 and the purpose of use Karamoja. Since INFOE is recognized as a non-profit organization, we will gladly issue a donation receipt (please don’t forget to include your address). We will report here on our blog about the use of the donations received and thank you for your support!
